There were any number of these feluccas plying
the Nile, mostly for the tourist trade. Walking along the corniche
(the riverfront road) in the city of Luxor, we encountered many men
offering felucca rides as well as rides in caleches (horse-drawn buggies).
They must use sails to go upriver (left/south) against the current; heading
downstream they mostly just let the river carry them along. The Nile is
still critical to the pattern of life in Egypt, even now that it is controlled.
