Dinner and breakfast
were included in the train fare, although we skipped breakfast both trips
because it was served soooo early. The dinner was quite edible,
mainly meat, rice, and oranges. Trains are always quite clever with their
use of space. These compartments had hide-away side tables; a fold-down
basin in the wall equipped with soap and a small towel (we still used our
bottled water, as we did everywhere in Egypt); and a kind of closet area
behind a curtain on the wall.
I think the flash
makes the seats appear grubbier than they did in reality; at the time I
thought they were respectably clean. Even the shared bathrooms at the end
of each car
were clean, at least to start with; they didn't stay that way for long,
though. The toilets were the old kind that are now illegal in North America,
where the flap at the bottom of the toilet opens straight
out to the tracks beneath. Sarah and Matthew thought that was
fascinating - gross, but fascinating.
