The Little Owl is common around the
Mediterranean. We saw several
both here and at Leptis Magna. The scientific name is Athene noctua;
notice the reference to Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, crafts, and
war, whose animal symbol was the owl. This little fellow appeared to be
building a nest in the shallow depression on top of this column.
