Egypt and Libya, March 19 - April 2, 2006 / 20060328b_SM_AirportMap

This is a map in the Tripoli charter airport (not the big one used for commercial flights) showing Gaddafi with his pride and joy: the Great Man-Made River. It
is an ambitious engineering achievement to bring pure groundwater from aquifers
deep in the desert to the major cities. Someone told me that given what's known
of their reserves, it is likely they will run out of groundwater around the same
time as they run out of oil. That would be unfortunate if it's true. At any rate, it means that in places where city water is used, like our hotel, we did not
have to be quite as paranoid about using bottled water for everything as we did
in Egypt.
