Dale took this picture the morning after the
eclipse, while everyone was finishing packing up and waiting for the buses
that would take us back to the airport at Nafura/Jalu. It gives a great
idea of just how utterly flat this area is. The
tire ruts at lower right are about the highest land feature. You can see
a few high clouds here; more of them formed as the day progressed. Had
this been eclipse day, we would still have been able to see it, but it
would have been much less spectacular. The communal breakfast this morning
was dreadful, because the caterers had been told there would be far fewer
people there than actually stayed for the second night. So they nearly
ran out of food, and what was left was pretty stale. Given the scale of
the operation, though, and the fact that Libya hadn't had much tourist
infrastructure before this time, we were very impressed with what they managed
to pull off.
