Venice: First View of the Nave of St. Mark's Basilica
The magnificent interiors of the domes are
high above you. Their colors are normally subdued in the dimness unless
there's a mass being conducted. But from about 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. each
day, the church turns on the lights and the spectacular gilded mosaics shine
brilliantly. If the intended effect is to inspire awe, it works. (If you're
going, book your tickets online in advance for this time period.)
In fact, I was so absorbed with the ceilings that I pretty much forgot to
look at the floors, which by all accounts are also beautiful. |
