Torcello Approaching the island of Torcello, which has been largely abandoned as a place to live. The island was settled in the 5th century, before what is now the city of Venice, and at one time had more than 10,000 people living on it; now there are about 20. It is mostly a wildlife reserve, plus the church complex visible here. (Bell tower under restoration.)
