The cathedral on Torcello, Santa Maria Dell'Assunta, was built in 639 AD, and was the seat of the bishop of Altino for a thousand years. (Think about that for a moment - a thousand years.) Its main claim to fame - and quite a claim it is, too - are several large and stunning Byzantine mosaics from the 11th-13th centuries. This one shows Christ with the Archangels Gabriel and Michael.
