Before the Colosseum The Colosseum was a massive project, built on the site of a small lake that was drained. (This is how there was a ready source of water for the early water events.) The lake was part of the grounds of Nero's "Domus Aurea" (golden house), to the right of the lake in this conception. The ruins of this opulent building are now buried beneath the ruins of the Trajan Baths.
