Vatican Museum The lone female philosopher in the group, Hypatia of Alexandria. The general consensus is that although the figure represents Hypatia, the likeness is actually that of Raphael's mistress, Margherita Luti, who was the daughter of a baker, appears in several of Raphael's other works, and was decidedly not his fiancée. In this painting, only "Hypatia" and Raphael himself, peeking out from behind a philosopher on the opposite side, are looking directly at the viewer. (Find him here.) |
