Detail of the beautiful coffering. The concrete
dome is about 20 feet thick at the base, tapering to ~4 feet thick near
the top. As far as I can determine, there has been no major restoration
work on the concrete, only cleaning to remove water stains and repair some
plaster. There are numerous cracks within it, but most are
horizontal and are thought to have occurred very early on. They are
primarily due to uneven settling of the foundation, and work has been
done over the centuries to stablize it. |
