20120606f_RomePantheonMarblework Pantheon, Rome

Detail of the decorative marble frieze below the concrete dome. Essentially all of this was "restored" in the mid-18th century – and by "restored", I mean "replaced with a design of the restorers' choosing". This panel was redone in the early 20th century based on information from excavations and research, to resemble the original design as closely as possible. Note that the properly-restored arrangement, with its inlaid circles and projecting miniature Corinthian-style capitals, echoes the design of the lower level.
