20120608a_D_ClimbingVesuvius Mount Vesuvius

After a week in Rome, we took the train south to Naples, then transferred to the small local train to get to the modern town of Pompei. After checking in the outstanding Hotel Diana, it was clear that the three teenagers had no interest in climbing a mountain even of such import as Mount Vesuvius, so the adults went on their own. It was easy and inexpensive to get a scheduled coach near the back entrance to the ruins of ancient Pompeii, which took us most of the way up the mountain. There we paid the entrance fee and walked less than 1 km to reach the crater rim. Although not long or particularly steep, the path was mostly cinders and a little uneven underfoot.
