Papyrus Scroll, Naples Museum A mostly-incinerated papyrus scroll, one of about 1,800 found in a very large, luxurious villa in Herculaneum that was therefore named the Villa of the Papyri. A technique was developed in the 1990's using multi-wavelength imaging, which allows many of the scrolls to be read. A large part of the villa still remains to be excavated, but the work is tied up in Italian governmental red tape. Ironically, being burned and buried has probably allowed more of the scrolls' content to be recovered than would have been possible had they been exposed to the sea air for any great length of time. |
