Egypt is a land of
contrasts: donkey carts are common everywhere outside of central Cairo,
trundling along right next to regular traffic. I felt sorry for the poor
donkeys, which were often pulling or carrying huge loads. There were a
number of small fields between housing areas, and we saw several herds
of a handful of goats being shepherded by young children. Many rural
homes were built of mud brick or stucco. They were small
and mostly in some disrepair. It is clearly not an affluent country; even
in Cairo, the cars were rarely new and generally pretty beaten up.
