After our driver and
our guide Heidi met us at the hotel, we drove south through Cairo toward
Memphis. This photo shows ubiquitous Cairo
mass-built apartment architecture: pour floors, supports, and stairs in
concrete, fill in the walls with brick, and put in some nice
windowframes/shutters (sometimes extravagantly nice). Then keep building
up after people move in on the lower floors. You can see this at the far
left and also at the rear of the center building. Very few of Cairo's
>16 million inhabitants live in an actual house, and there wouldn't
be room for everyone if they tried.
