The Sphinx was
impressive to see. It's something that everyone
just kind of knows about ("Hey, that's the Sphinx!"), and it
has been a landmark for travellers for thousands of years. Sadly, it is badly
damaged from weathering, vandalism, and misguided earlier
attempts at restoration. It is smaller than I expected, but perhaps
that's because you are no longer allowed to go stand between its paws
to get the full effect of gazing up at it.
You get this view by coming through the
Valley Temple, which is down the slight incline from the Sphinx. Pity about the
scaffolding; it appears to have been removed about 2 weeks after we were
there.
That's the Great Pyramid (Khufu's) in the
background.
