Remember that guy on
the camel a few photos
back? Here he is again. I love this shot. Note the remains of the limestone
casing near the top of the pyramid; none of the others still have this.
Originally it encased the entire pyramid, with the blocks shaped so that
the pyramid's sloping sides were smooth and straight. It was white and
polished, and would have glistened brilliantly in the sun. Now, what's left
of it is pitted and discolored from years of weathering and pollution.
When we left the pyramids, we spent a few
minutes looking around a store and gently fending off children
selling postcards. It was mid-afternoon, and we could hear the call to
prayer from a number of nearby mosques. The muezzins now use loudspeakers,
so the calls come from all directions. We spent a couple of hours relaxing
in our hotel room (Misr was very good about convincing the hotels to let
us keep a room during the day we were leaving) and were then driven to
the Giza train station.
