We took the sleeper train from Cairo to Luxor,
getting on at Giza (which was closer to our hotel). It was reasonably priced,
and a real adventure for the kids. We thought this was our train when it
first showed up, but it
turned out to be a third-class sleeper. From the outside, though, they
looked basically the same. Security in Egypt appeared to be taken especially
seriously on the trains: there were armed soldiers with machine guns poking
out of the train windows at the front and back from the time the train
approached the station until it had pulled out. Most (all?) of the passengers
in the sleeper compartments were tourists, including a couple of other
families with children. Kids as tourists were not very common.
