This is the entrance to Luxor Temple, about
2 miles from Karnak in the heart of the modern city of Luxor. The pylons
are smaller but thicker than Karnak's, and the entrance is flanked by two
big statues of - guess who - Ramses II. The crowds are useful to give a
sense of scale; it's all bigger than you realize at first. The obelisk was
also originally one of a pair; its mate, which once stood on the empty
pedestal in the foreground, was taken by Napoleon and now stands in the
Place de la Concorde in Paris.
