This is the view as you first enter Luxor
temple. Notice the mosque up to the left (Abu al-Haggag), which was built
in the 13th century. At that time, large parts of the temple were buried
deep in sand and silt, and it was at ground level. Clearly, though,
large parts of the ruins must have been visible. As with Karnak, paintings
of Luxor done around 1840 show how it looked then.
