Matthew with a group of Egyptian
schoolchildren who were on a tour of Hatshepsut's temple. We were often
mobbed by children (and sometimes adults!) who were fascinated with Sarah
and Matthew; there were very few foreign children where we went. This
group were about 11 years old, very curious and outgoing. Many of them
spoke excellent English, and none ever asked for money or any other
handouts. They were eager to have their photo taken with him, but
unfortunately while I was distracted looking at the results, they swept
him away with them. After a few seconds I noticed and called him; he
actually had to work to extricate himself from the herd. Naturally
he was quite frightened by this experience and firmly avoided school
groups after that.
