The upper level is just outside the row of
columns in the earlier photo. Originally there were many statues of
Hatshepsut here, but most of them were either destroyed or reshaped by
Thutmoses III, along with many of her cartouches both here and at Karnak.
The logical time for revenge would have been when he first took the throne
after her death, so the timing decades later does seem to suggest a
different reason for the desecration.
