This is the mihrab, or niche indicating
the direction of Mecca, so the attendees know where to face during
prayer. It is beautifully decorated. On this morning the mosque was
full of schoolchildren running around making lots of noise, and generally
behaving like happy, energetic children. The girls are encouraged to
start covering their heads around age 12, though it is not strictly
required and some start even sooner.
