This mosque was built during the
mid-1800's by Mohammed Ali pasha, ruler of Egypt at the time. However
the citadel where it stands is much older. That was founded around
1180AD by
another leader, Salah al-Din. He fought the Crusaders in Palestine; they
knew him as Saladin. There were many men
waiting outside for Friday prayers to start.
