We spent part of
an afternoon our last day wandering around the medina. Even with this
map, which was handed out by the guides before we left the hotel, we got
utterly confused almost immediately after leaving the main street of
silversmiths (lower right, behind the castle housing the museum). The
streets are narrow and unpaved, the houses are old, and many of the
people we saw here were clearly poorer than those walking around the
modern streets. There were many small shops, and a few open areas
with informal markets. Fortunately it was impossible to get really
lost: our hotel was tall enough and close enough that we could actually
see it any time we got a clear view west, so we always knew roughly
which direction to aim for.
If you prefer, here's a satellite
view of the same area, showing our hotel to the left of the medina.
