20120606l_RomeStAgnesFerrata St. Agnes on the Pyre, Rome

This sculpture by Ercole Ferrata stands quietly in an alcove in the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone, on the Piazza Navone. I could hardly take my eyes off it. I've since read descriptions that call it overly melodramatic, but I found it arresting, and spent quite a bit of extra time in the church gazing at it. I now rank it among my favorites, along with Canova's sculture of Cupid and Psyche in the Louvre, and Bernini's Apollo and Daphne in the Galleria Borghese.
